Toddler dies in swimming pool

ATTALLA - AL -

Authorities say a 2-year-old girl has died after she fell into a swimming pool in Attalla. The death occurred Thursday afternoon at a residence on John Avenue in the northeast Alabama town.

The Etowah County Coroner's Office identified the child as Lily Degan. Authorities say the girl was staying with her grandmother while her mother was at work and she wandered to a neighbor's house. A board was missing on the fence surrounding the in-ground pool, and the child apparently was trying to get to a dog inside the fence. The pool was covered, but the toddler apparently stepped on the cover and fell through.
