The number of flu or flu-like symptoms is increasing in Alabama as the state braces for one of the worst seasons it's seen in years.

Children's of Alabama released recent statistics during a press briefing Wednesday afternoon.

At Children's of Alabama primary care practices, the number of flu or flu-like symptoms increased by 133 percent across all practices in a three-week period.

During the week of Nov. 19, 18 percent of patients seen were treated for flu or flu-like symptoms. Last week, 42 percent of patients seen were treated for flu or flu-like symptoms.

"Complications of flu can be very serious and even life-threatening," said Dr. Susan Walley, a physician in the hospital's medicine division.

Walley stressed prevention and added it's not too late to receive the flu vaccine.

"The flu vaccine is very effective this year...90 percent against the circulating strains of the virus," she added. "While nothing is 100 percent, it's certainly very effective when preventing flu or causing less severe symptoms."
