BIRMINGHAM - AL -
From the McWane Science Center to Botanical Gardens and the Birmingham Museum of Art, Mayor William Bell wants to put Birmingham on the map.
Wednesday, seven local businesses, including the McWane Science Center, Sloss Furnace, Botanical Gardens, Vulcan Park, Barber Motor Sports Park, Birmingham Zoo and the Birmingham Museum of Art, say they are very proud to be on board with the 50th anniversary of the civil rights movement, which is coming up in 2013.
McWane Science Center is going to have a science of race exhibit, Sloss Furnace is going to be hosting a series of race related lectures. Botanical Gardens will be having free, guided tours as well as other programs and Vulcan Park will be showcasing local high school students' artwork, which will be depicting civil rights in the 1960s. The Birmingham Museum of Art says it will bring in well-known artists to help tell the story of Birmingham's history.
Mayor Bell says he is excited to show people not just where Birmingham has been, but also, where it is going.
"Once [people] come [to Birmingham], they understand that we're warm people," he said. "We have a lot of positive things going on in our community and it changes the whole perception and image that people have. So, we want to make sure that we involve these institutions in an effort to show the Birmingham of today and the Birmingham of the future as well."
