Proposed legislation comes down hard on senior predators

Posted: Updated:

The state of Alabama may get tougher on criminals who prey on senior citizens...whether its physical abuse or financial exploitation.

Monday, Lawmakers announced proposed legislation at the Heardmont Senior Center in Cahaba Valley.

Current laws only protect victims who are 65 years or older  and considered mentally incompetent.

But, the new legislation would make abuse or exploitation a Class A felony for victims 60 or older as well.  Anyone convicted would face up to 10 years in prison.

The new 'Senior Protection Legislation' will be introduced when the legislature convenes in February.
