Inpatient and ER Care to end at Cooper Green Dec. 31

Posted: Updated:

The end of the year will signal an end to inpatient care and the Emergency Room services at Cooper Green Mercy Hospital.

Monday afternoon, the deputy county manager on behalf of county manager Tony Petelos announced the county would turn over its acute care license. The decision was made after the county had to give the hospital an additional $27 million over the last two years to keep it afloat.

According to a healthcare consultant, occupancy is under 20 percent. That's why the ER will become an urgent care center and area hospitals will take over ER service as well as inpatient care January 1. Clinics will also open around the county to provide better preventative care.
