The No. 1 Hoover Bucs won their ninth state championship in school history by shutting out Opelika 31-0 Friday night at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Hoover head coach Josh Niblett relied heavily on his workhorse running back Calen Campbell to run away with the title, finishing a perfect 15-0 along the way.

Campbell, the game's MVP, had 30 rushing attempts and racked up 191 yards and three touchdowns in the win. In the final three games of the season, he accounted for 10 touchdowns, and his 45-yard scamper for a touchdown in the fourth quarter sealed the fate of the Bulldogs. Campbell finishes the season with 1,476 yards and 20 touchdowns.

Hoover's other scoring plays came from kicker Hunter Schmith, who kicked a 22-yard field goal in the third quarter, and quarterback Connor Short, who hit Cooper Carden for a 7-yard touchdown pass in the fourth.

Hoover's offense rolled up 371 total yards on their way to hoisting the blue state trophy.

The Bucs' defense held Opelika to 181 yards of offense, and Alabama football legacy Marlon Humphrey picked off a pass and returned it 44 yards, setting his offense up for a score.

Before tonight, the 2004 Hoover Bucs were the only team to win the AHSAA Class 6A State Championship with an undefeated record.

Opelika finishes the season 10-5 after making an incredible playoff run to earn a spot in the title game. After losing the regular season finale to Hoover, the Bulldogs reeled off four straight wins over four talented teams in Pelham, Daphne, Auburn and Carver-Montgomery.

The Bucs cruised through the North bracket in Class 6A seemingly without a scratch. Hoover thumped Shades Valley and Pell City in the opening rounds before discarding their cross-town rival Vestavia Hills 21-7 at Vestavia in the quarterfinals.

Hoover was dominant in their semifinal showdown with Clay-Chalkville, sending the Cougars packing with a 44-20 crushing. They topped it all off with a shutout tonight, the Bucs' third of the season.

Since 2008, the Bucs have piled up an astounding 70 wins with only six losses.
