Tanner downs Washington County 28-14 to win 2A state championship

The top-ranked Tanner Rattlers took down Washington County 28-14 to win the AHSAA Class 2A State Championship, their first in school history.

Tanner's Fred Rich was named the game's MVP after he rushed for 79 yards and two touchdowns in the win that capped off an undefeated 14-0 season. Quarterback Jonathon Fletcher also scored twice, once on offense and the other on defense. Fletcher had a five-yard touchdown run in the third quarter then returned an interception 44 yards for a score in the fourth quarter.

Washington County had three costly turnovers in the loss, all of which led to Tanner touchdowns. Quarterback T.J. Kidd accounted for all 14 points scored in the loss. He had a 5-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter then threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to DeMarcus Holcombe in the final quarter.

Washington County ended the season with a 13-2 record.
