Alabama's Barrett Jones named college football's best center, wins Rimington Trophy

Posted: Updated:

Alabama's All-American center, Barrett Jones, was named the recipient of the 2012 Rimington Trophy Thursday night at the Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show presented by ESPN.

The award is given annually to the nation's most outstanding center in college football by the Boomer Esiason Foundation.

"I am truly honored to be recognized as the winner of the Rimington Trophy. The job of learning the center position as a senior has been one of the most difficult challenges of my career, but also one of the most enjoyable and rewarding. With that said, this award would not have been possible without all of my teammates, coaches and specifically the rest of our offensive line," Jones said.

Jones, a member of the 2012 AFCA Good Works Team, became the first Alabama player to win the award, and he was just the third Crimson Tide player to be named a finalist for the trophy. Just two days ago, the senior offensive lineman won the William V. Campbell Trophy, recognizing the best scholar-athlete in the nation.

"From day one, Barrett Jones has been an indispensable part of the Alabama Crimson Tide's offensive line," said Dave Rimington, president of the Boomer Esiason Foundation. "He has enjoyed outstanding success on the playing field and in the classroom. We are extremely proud to name him the winner of the 2012 Rimington Trophy. Congratulations to Barrett and all the watch list candidates and finalists."

Jones will travel to Lincoln, Neb. in January to be officially recognized as the recipient of the trophy at the 13th Annual Rimington Trophy Presentation.

Bid for second Outland Trophy falls short

Jones took home the 2011 Outland Trophy last season, given to the nation's most outstanding interior lineman by the Football Writers Association of America, and was a finalist for the trophy again this year. His bid in becoming just the second player in history to win the trophy twice fell short when Texas A&M's Luke Joeckl was named the 2012 recipient.

Dave Rimington of Nebraska remains the only player with two Outland Trophies after he won in 1981 and 1982.

Walter Camp All-America Team

Also on Thursday night, the Walter Camp Football Foundation named Jones a first-team selection to the Walter Camp All-America Team.

On January 7, Jones and the second-ranked Crimson Tide will square off with top-ranked Notre Dame in the 2013 BCS National Championship game in Miami, his third appearance in the title game in five seasons at Alabama. In his 50th career start, he has a chance to win three national titles playing three different positions on the offensive line.

Jones played right guard for Alabama's 2009 SEC and BCS title team before winning his second national championship ring last year playing left tackle. He added another SEC Championship ring to his collection last week after the Crimson Tide took down Georgia in Atlanta.

Win or lose against the Irish in 31 days, No. 75 will go down as one of the single-greatest student-athletes to ever attend the University of Alabama.
