Two families will find Homes for the Holidays

PINSON - AL -

Two families are thinking about where the Christmas tree and family photos will go in their new houses.

ABC 33/40 and other sponsors will pitch in to help the single mothers become first time homeowners this holiday.

The groundbreaking on a new house was an emotional moment for Dedra Kimbell.

"This is really a dream come true for me. I've always wanted to be a homeowner but had no idea how I was going to get there," said the mother of two teenagers, Carl and Carlos.

Her soon to be neighbor certainly understands.

"I was shocked. I really thought this was not for me. Nothing really turns out for me," said new homeowner Monique Boyd of owning a house.

But applications to Habitat for Humanity, homeownership classes, and hundreds of sweat hours changed that for both of the single mothers and their sons who will finally have a place to call home.

"It's a blessing for us. God put us in this position to have this house," said Carl Kimbell, Kimbell's son.

Carl and his brother, Carlos, took the day off from classes at Homewood High School to help put up the walls to their new house.

The Boyd brothers, fourth and fifth graders at Tarrant Intermediate School, weren't able to help out. But they're excited to finally have their own rooms.

"I'm going to put some toys in my room, and I'm going to put some toys in my brother's room," said Tariq Boyd of his decorating plans.

Both women say they aren't hand. But that's quickly changing as they help build their own houses.

"I'm hoping to learn how to do plumbing. That's what I want to learn, so if the toilet gets stopped up or the sink, I can fix it myself," said Kimbell.

But she's also looking forward to and looking for a place to put up her Christmas tree, and Boyd hopes to overcome her fear of heights to hang family pictures.

"It's not big, just pictures on the wall. I've never really had pictures on the wall. Shocking," said Boyd.

The women and their sons will soon get to enjoy those perks of homeownership when they get the keys to their new houses on December 20.

This is ABC 33/40's tenth year to participate in Home for the Holidays.
