TUSCALOOSA - AL -

Tuscaloosa's first shopping center will soon come down.

Tuesday night, city council voted unanimously to demolish the Leland Shopping Center in the Alberta Community.

It was build in 1959, but in recent years much of the strip mall had fallen into disrepair.  The building also took a blow from last year's tornado.

Owners said they didn't have plans to repair the building, so city leaders began the demolition process.

Two businesses, Family Dollar and the long-time Wright's Restaurant are still operating in the shopping center but plan to move soon.

Councilman Kip Tyner tells ABC 33/40 that a Birmingham based shopping center developer is looking at the property and it could be a perfect location for a Hotel-Retail proposal.
