Gus Malzahn will be the new head football coach at Auburn, according to numerous sources.
Malzahn, the Tigers' offensive coordinator from 2009-2011, returns to Auburn one year after taking the Arkansas State head coaching job. The 2010 Frank Broyles Award winner led the Red Wolves to a Sun Belt Championship and a berth in the GoDaddy.com Bowl this season with a 9-3 record.
The Auburn search committee -- athletic director Jay Jacobs, Pat Sullivan, Bo Jackson and Mac Crawford -- chose Malzahn over Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart and others. Smart interviewed for the job on Monday.
The committee and Malzahn are expected to land at the Auburn University Regional Airport Tuesday evening, and a news conference will be held at 8 p.m. to announce the hiring. ABC 33/40 will carry the event live on television and the web via live stream.
Malzahn replaces his former boss, Gene Chizik, after he was fired on November 25 following a 3-9 record this season, and going 0-8 in the SEC.
ABC 33/40 will have a crew at the airport, and we will have updates at our news at 5, 6 and 10 p.m.
