At the wrong place at the wrong time. That's how Birmingham Mayor William Bell is describing his Friday night encounter with mayhem, but his security team was in the right place at the right time. The mayor's security team got into a gunfight with the suspects who had shot at another vehicle next to Mayor Bell's vehicle. Two suspects were shot in the incident.
Bell said the officers told him to put his head down as they followed the car and called for back up.
"But sometimes curiosity gets the best of you. I had to know what was going on", said Bell.
Friday night, the mayor was on his way to his home on the near westside of town. He had just left a fundraiser downtown and was traveling along Abraham Woods Blvd when incident took place.
"I would have been derelict my duty, my officers would have been derelict in their duty if they didn't do what they did," said Bell
Earlier in his career as a probation officer, the mayor says he encountered a dangerous situation, but nothing like this.
The Alabama Bureau of Investigations is handling the probe of the incident. It says it will not comment on the ongoing investigation. The findings will be passed onto the Jefferson County District Attorney.
