NORTHPORT - AL -

The city of Northport plans to overhaul its police communications system in the next two years at an estimated cost of about $1.5 million.  Northport's communication system has had a hard time keeping up as the city limits have grown.  The existing radio system still works, but there are dead spots in some parts of the city.  It doesn't work as well in the northern part of the city or in areas with deep hills or valleys.  In those areas, officers keep a backup two-way radio for communication just in case.  Northport's current system can't be used to communicated with Tuscaloosa police or the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Department.
