Two shot following car chase with Birmingham Police; Mayor Bell's security detail involved

Birmingham Police dispatch has confirmed that two subjects have suffered gunshot wounds following a car pursuit with officers.

The incident happened around 8 p.m. on Interstate 59 North with the chase ending at the 22nd Street exit. All northbound lanes are currently closed.

The conditions of the subjects shot is unknown at this time.

We will continue to follow this story and provide updates as information is made available.

Update #1

Police have recovered a weapon off of 17th Street North, and the Alabama Bureau of Investigation was called to the scene to investigate the incident.

Two Birmingham Police officers were involved in the shooting.

Both suspects shot were taken to UAB Hospital. Their conditions remain unknown.

I-59 North is now open.

According to an al.com report, Mayor William Bell's security detail was involved in the incident.

Birmingham Police Department release:

"The Birmingham Police Department reports that two Birmingham Police Officers were involved in a shooting that occurred on today, November 30, 2012 at I-59 North and the 22nd Street exit.

At approximate 7:47 p.m., officers from the North Precinct responded to the 300 block of 8th Avenue North to investigate a report of shots fired.  Moments later, officers were dispatched to I-59 North and the 22nd Street exit.  Upon arrival, officers discovered that two Birmingham Police Officers were involved in a shooting with three suspects.

One black male suspect and one black female suspect were taken to UAB Hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds.  A third black male suspect was taken into custody without incident.  There were no other reported injuries.  The identity of the three suspects have not been confirmed.  

The Alabama Bureau of Investigation or A.B.I. is the lead investigating agency.  The three suspects have not been formally charged."
