Your Health 11-29-12 HIV toll on black Americans

Posted: Updated:

Black Americans make up 14 percent of the population, while they are among 44 percent of all new HIV infections.

This is according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The CDC estimates that one of every 16 black men and one of every 32 black women will be diagnosed with AIDS virus at some point in their life.

Black Americans also have dramatically higher death rates related to HIV.

Black men with HIV and less than a 12th grade education have a death rate of 53 per 100,000 in the general population.

President and chief executive of the Black AIDS Institute in Los Angeles, Phill Wilson says, "If we do nothing, this epidemic will continue and people will continue to get infected.  Black communities will be decimated. We have to act fast, and in a responsible way."

For white men with a similar education, that rate is 5 per 100,000 and, for Hispanic men, it's 9 per 100,000.

December 1 is World AIDS Day.

This research appears in the Archives of Internal Medicine.#
