James Stewart Robinson of Vestavia Hills turned himself in to the Jefferson County Jail Monday night.  He is charged with Cruelty to a Dog and is being held on a $40,000 bond.

Robinson is accused of killing Rufus, an American Staffordshire Terrier, by slicing the animal's throat. The custody of the pet had become a point of contention in an ongoing divorce proceeding. Each party wanted custody of the dog.

The investigation into the dog's death began in June.  Robinson blamed the death of the dog on his estranged wife; however, results of a forensic analysis and electronic data recovered in the form of emails, text messages and voice mails indicated that Robinson had killed the dog.

The investigation was a joint effort between the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the University of Florida Animal Forensics Laboratory.
