SHELBY COUNTY - AL -

The Shelby County Sheriff's Office reports the device discovered Sunday morning at Heardmont Park was a hoax and was harmless.

Shelby County Sheriff's deputies, Hoover and Pelham Police officers, and representatives of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (BATF), and the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) responded to the scene. The device was determined to have no explosives present.

Heardmont Park is now reopen to the public.

Heardmont Park is closed Sunday morning while a possible explosive device is investigated by local law enforcement.

Around 7 a.m., Shelby County 911 received a call reporting a suspicious package at the Heardmont Park Sports Complex, which is located off Cahaba Valley Road. Shelby County Sheriff's deputies responded to the scene and determined the package needed to be removed by bomb technicians. The Hoover Police Department's explosive ordinance and demolition team was called to the scene.

The park is closed until the situation is resolved and a thorough search of the park has been completed. Cahaba Valley Road, also known as Highway 119, remains open to local traffic, but drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes while first responders work in the area.

Anyone who has information pertaining to this situation is urged to contact the Shelby County Sheriff's Office at 669-4181.
