Tulsa Hosts USA BMX's Biggest Event Ever

Posted: Updated:

USA BMX's Grand National is putting the spotlight on Tulsa, as this is the organization's biggest event yet.

There are about 3,800 riders and 678 motos this weekend at Expo Square.

"What makes this race the greatest race on earth is that it concludes 30 races across the country," said USA BMX representative Craig Barrette. "It all comes down to this one, this weekend in Tulsa."

USA BMX will hold two more events in Tulsa next year. One will be in March and the other, again, in November. The organization has heard some wishes from Tulsans that the sport move its headquarters here. However, that move is highly unlikely.

"I think Tulsa would love USA BMX to come to Tulsa and be headquartered here. They're always talking about it. I don't know if that will ever happen," said Barrette.

One racing family from Sand Springs told Channel 8 they love having the Grand National so close to home.

"I'm sure, economically, it's wonderful for Tulsa. It shows everybody that we live in a great state. Hopefully, bring it back here year after year," said a mother of two competitors.

The professionals will compete in a final round Saturday night at 6 p.m. This is the only part of the event that requires paid entry. Some of that money goes back to the Tulsa Sports Commission. Races will continue Sunday.
