Cost of Thanksgiving Dinner

Posted: Updated:

When you sit down for Thanksgiving Dinner, be thankful that the cost of that meal, is up only slightly over last year. According to the American Farm Bureau Federation, the average cost of a Thanksgiving Dinner for ten, with turkey and the traditional sides, is $49.48 this year, up 28 cents. The value of that market basket is up about half-a-percent.

The bulk of the bill is the turkey which is up three percent to $22.23. Turkey competes with chicken and pork and beef and other products. Turkey production itself is actually a little higher this year so it's not an issue of turkey not being available, it's just that the meat prices overall have gone up.

Other items with an up tick in price are those miscellaneous ingredients like onions, eggs, sugar, flour and butter up eight cents. Dinner rolls are up three cents. Items with the biggest drop in price are whipping cream which is down 13 cents, followed by stuffing and sweet potatoes which are down 11 cents.
