Hostess Brands' decision Friday to end operations will affect more than 100 employees at downtown Birmingham's Merita Bakery.
Hostess filed a motion to liquidate with U.S. Bankruptcy Court after striking workers nationwide crippled its ability to maintain production.
"It's my 15 year anniversary today, and I was told I no longer have a job today," said Merita employee Kimberly Butler. "This was my livelihood. It helped me raise nine kids."
About 18,500 employees across the country will lose their jobs. Bakery outlet stores will remain open for several days in order to sell products.
