Nov. 14 is World Diabetes Day. The hope is that by raising awareness and educating people about diabetes, people who have a chance to prevent type 2 and gestational diabetes will be able to do so.
Type 1 isn't currently preventable. Type 2 used to be called adult-onset, now children are being diagnosed with it. Gestational diabetes occurs during pregnancy.
As many as 366 million people have diabetes worldwide, according to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF).
Most of those people have type 2 diabetes, and many don't even know they have the disease.
In the United States, almost 26 million people have diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association.
World Diabetes Day is sponsored by the (IDF).
