Unless Congress renews the adoption tax credit many families rely on to offset the expensive cost of adoptions, the refund worth up to $12,650 is set to expire the end of this year.

"Adoptions can cost anywhere from $20,000 to $40,000 when you talk about travel and all those expenses," said Matthew Wilson who adopted a little girl from Uganda two years ago. "And for us, the adoption tax credit helped pay for half of our adoption. We couldn't have done it without it."

The credit applies to all adoptions besides step-parents. There is a national effort underway to urge Congress to extend the tax credit.

There are two bills in both the House and Senate that would accomplish that goal.
