Your Health 11-12-12 Stress impact on young girls

Posted: Updated:

Ever wonder how just being around stress may affect a little girl?

If so, you may find this new research a little disturbing.

New research suggests that girls who are born into families with high levels of stress are more likely to suffer from anxiety and disruptions in brain function as teenagers.

The University of Wisconsin researchers also found that female babies who lived with stressed mothers had higher levels of a stress hormone known as cortisol as preschoolers.

And the girls with those higher cortisol levels were more likely to have less effective wiring in their brains between areas that regulate emotion.

The study authors noted that males didn't seem to be affected by these issues.

The findings appear in the journal, Nature Neuroscience.
