Tulsa guard James Woodard was named Conference USA Men's Basketball Freshman of the Week after scoring 28 points in Sunday's season-opening 110-54 win over LSU Shreveport, the league office announced Monday.
The rookie from Edmond, Okla., made 9-of-12 field goals, including 5-of-6 three-pointers and 5-of-5 free throws in 20 minutes on the floor. He tallied 18 points by halftime and connected on his first six shots of the game. He also committed no turnovers in the contest.
Woodard's 28 points were the most scored by a Tulsa freshman in 19 years, since Shea Seals scored 33 against Houston Baptist on Nov. 27, 1993.
The Golden Hurricane travels to San Diego this week for the NUCDF Challenge. The Hurricane plays Northern Kentucky at 6:30 p.m. CT Thursday, San Diego at 9 p.m. CT Friday, and Cal State Northridge at 7 p.m. CT Saturday.
