Jefferson county commission approves sewer increase

Posted: Updated:

Neither a public hearing nor a plea from the state attorney general was enough to stop a majority of Jefferson county commissioners from voting in favor of a sewer rate increase; the first one since 2008.

Attorney General Luther Strange sent a letter calling the rate hike premature. Strange also said it was unfair for users to pay for the mistakes of others.

Commissioners listened as the letter was read, and also heard less than a dozen sewer users speak out against an increase. Commissioners, however, said they couldn't risk bankruptcy court putting a receiver back in place. The four commissioners present voted in favor of the increase. Commissioner George Bowman did not attend the meeting.

Bills will increase by less than two dollars for the average user beginning in March, 2013.
