Posted: Updated:

The Jefferson County Board of Education unanimously approved a contract for its new superintendent on Tuesday morning.

The 3-year, $185,000 contract for Dr. Stephen Nowlin is effective January 1, 2013.  He begins on January 2nd.   Dr. Phil Hammonds will retire in February.  Nowlin will train with Hammonds for the month leading into Hammonds retirement.

In addition to his salary, the contract also calls for a 3.5% pay raise each year; however, he must receive a satisfactory evaluation from the board.  Nowlin will also receive a car and housing allowance.

Nowlin is currently the superintendent of Lee County schools in Opelika.  He was chosen by the JefCo BOE in a 4-1 vote in October.
