Freedom Rides Museum to receive national award

Posted: Updated:

Montgomery's Freedom Rides Museum is being honored with a national award.  The museum has been named one of 22 winners of the 2012 National Preservation Awards.  The museum is located in the city's old Greyhound bus station, where activists were attacked by an angry mob in 1961.  The Freedom Riders were traveling in buses to demonstrate against racial segregation.  The bus station was slated for demolition until a preservation effort saved it.  The award will be presented Friday in Spokane, Washington.
