BIRMINGHAM - AL -

Homeless dogs may find a new home in time for the holidays when the Birmingham Ballet and the Greater Birmingham Humane Society join forces for a new adoption promotion and fundraiser, billed as The Mutt-cracker.

The Friday evening performance of the Birmingham Ballet's The Nutcracker is sure to be special. Alumni dogs from the Greater Birmingham Humane Society will appear in the opening scenes of the ballet and briefly in Act II. Some dogs will be on leash, while others will be carried by dancers. Audience members will have the opportunity to meet the canine stars before the show and during intermission and to find out more about others who need a forever home for the holidays.

Dogs from the Birmingham area and surrounding locations are being called to audition for various roles today! Auditions are from 2:00 to 4:00 at the Birmingham Ballet Performing Arts Center, located at 2198 Columbiana Road in Vestavia. Please arrive about 15 minutes early. Roles are available to dogs with and without special skills or behaviors. Rescue dogs are encouraged to audition.

Rehearsals for The Mutt-cracker will begin in November and be primarily once a week at night or on Saturdays. The one-night-only performance of the show will be at the BJCC on Friday, December 7th at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets to The Mutt-cracker and all Nutcracker performances can purchased online at www.birminghamballet.com. One dollar of every ticket sold to the Friday night performance will benefit the Greater Birmingham Humane Society.

Audition Rules:

  • Must be vaccinated, well-mannered, socialized, and non-aggressive
  • Should be on a leash
  • Audition will be completed with the company of their owners and/or trainers
  • If your dog has special skills, you will be asked to show them. Dogs without special skills will be evaluated for their ability to participate in a performance.
