Points to be had in UAB, Tulane matchup in New Orleans

Posted: Updated:

The UAB Blazers will be on the road Saturday in search of their first Conference USA victory as they visit New Orleans to take on the Tulane Green Wave.

Despite Tulane's record (1-6, 1-2) and miserable statistics to date, UAB head coach Garrick McGee respects his next opponent's athletic ability and feels his team will have their hands full in trying for win number two in 2012.

"They have a lot of really good athletes," McGee said. "Offensively, they are balanced. Most teams in the country have studied Sean Payton and the New Orleans Saints' play-action passing game, and Tulane uses similar plays in their offense. Those plays are very tough to defend.

"We will have our hands full, and it will just come down to somebody making plays to win the game while the other team does not. Most of the time, the team that makes those plays wins the game."

Tulane's offense has struggled to do much of anything through seven games this season, and they are currently ranked dead last in the country in total offense and scoring offense.  They  have scored just nine touchdowns in 2012 and are averaging only 13.1 points per game.

In contrast, UAB (1-6, 0-3) is ranked No. 60 in total offense and has scored 25 touchdowns.  The Blazers average 28 points per game.

As for defense, well, both are bad.

Opponents are averaging 35 points a game against UAB's 105th-ranked scoring defense in the nation, and are giving up an average of 439 yards per game.

Those numbers would make any defensive coordinator cringe in embarrassment, and Tulane's defensive stats are worse.

The Green Wave is currently ranked 108th in the FBS in total defense, and are surrendering, on average, 475 yards per game and 37 points a game to opposing offenses.

Needless to say, both teams should have plenty of opportunities to put up big numbers on the scoreboard.

Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome
