Alternative to Halloween candy

Posted: Updated:

Trick or treating can be a fun rite of passage for about 41 million kids every Halloween.  But there is a downside to collecting the most candy in the neighborhood.

With all that candy comes loads of sugar.  For some parents, the thought of your child eating all that candy can be enough to frighten them.

Take note if you sympathize with those parents:  There's no steadfast rule that says you must pass out candy to all those ghosts and goblins.

There are plenty of alternative treat ideas that children will find fun and parents will appreciate for their nutritional value.

Amy Jamieson-Petonic, a registered dietitian at Cleveland Clinic, says you need to think out of the box when passing out treats this Halloween.

"Instead of doing candy, we can do toothbrushes, we can do pencils, we can do stickers, we can do some other non-food items," says Jamieson-Petonic.

Packages of dried fruits are a great Halloween treat alternative.  They provide many of the same nutritional benefits as fresh fruit, but have a much longer shelf life.

Also, popcorn can actually be a healthy snack, when it is not coated in butter or fattening oils.
