European Union files complaint against Microsoft

Posted: Updated:

The EU is accusing the Microsoft of failure to comply with a binding agreement that allows customers the opportunity to choose different internet browsers.

In 2009, the European Commission, the executive arm of the EU, told Microsoft it must give users a choice of browsers making sure it wasn't forcing Internet Explorer on users.

Microsoft created a "choice screen" but in July admitted that a technical error may have prevented millions of users in the EU from seeing it between February 2009 and July 2012.

If found in breach of antitrust law, Microsoft could face a fine of up to 10 percent of its annual revenue.
