Changes continue for Birmingham City School Board

Posted: Updated:

More changes are on the way for the Birmingham City School System.

Board members met Tuesday to complete two main tasks: approve and hear board governance policies and officially accept the resignation of former board president Edward Maddox, along with opening the application process for his replacement.

Dr. Ed Richardson, head of the state's intervention team, says the two tasks can help the board move forward if its members work together. In fact, he says the AdvanceED, the SACS accrediting agency, already has concerns regarding governance issues, and Maddox's resignation, only underlines those concerns. However, he says, based on how the board proceeds, AdvanceED could either let the board continue with its changes or conduct its own investigation.

Richardson says, meanwhile, the board has hired a demographer to look at population and attendance figures across the area to see what schools could be closed or consolidated. Richardson says cuts need to be made to shore up money in its reserve fund. He expects to have that proposal and list complete by mid- to late November.
