A documentary detailing former Alabama and NFL star Kevin Turner's battle with ALS will premiere Sunday afternoon on ESPN Classic. "American Man" will air at 4 p.m. CST.
The film was produced and directed by Jon Frankel of HBO's "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel".
Turner was diagnosed with ALS in 2010. He believes his condition is a due to the dangerous toll of football and the NFL. The Kevin Turner Foundation is based on the theory that athletes that are subjected to head injuries and brain trauma are at greater risk of being developing ALS.
Turner played fullback for the University of Alabama from 1988 to 1992 before spending eight seasons in the NFL with the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles.
Turner is among more than 2,000 former NFL players that are part of a lawsuit which accuses the league of "deliberately and fraudulently concealing from its players the link between football-related head impacts and long-standing neurological injuries".
"American Man" won the jury award for best documentary at Birmingham's Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival in August.
