Glencoe welcomes hometown hero during homecoming celebration Friday

Posted: Updated:

It was an emotional homecoming as hundreds of Glencoe residents welcomed wounded warrior Army Spc. Josh Wetzel Friday. He returned home for the first time since he lost both legs in May during a roadside bombing in Afghanistan.

Wetzel arrived at the Birmingham Shuttlesworth International Airport Friday morning and was greeted by a crowd of supporters.

Fighting back tears, Wetzel said: "I'm just so happy to be home. I'm not in a box. I came walking in, you know. I wasn't going to come home in a wheelchair, because I wasn't going to let everybody see me riding around."

Police escorted Wetzel and family members to Glencoe, hundreds of people holding signs cheered when he arrived.

Wetzel plans to stay in Alabama for more than a week before returning to Walter Reed Medical Center for treatment.
