Haase makes instant impression on UAB basketball

Posted: Updated:

New UAB basketball coach Jerod Haase has the Blazers attention.

"One of my players before practice two days ago was taping one of his ankles and said, `Wow coach, you kind of cranked it up on us,' Haase said at UAB's Media Day on Wednesday. "I looked at him and I said, `you bet your rear-end I did'."

The Blazers coach is eager to show off the early results. Basketball will hold it's 'Hoops on the Haase-phalt' event Friday night in downtown Birmingham. The exhibition will include a slam dunk contest, 3-point shootout, and team scrimmage.

"We want people to leave there wanting more of UAB basketball," Haase said. "Word has been spread and we are hoping for a great crowd. All the things we are doing from our end, like the courts, the lights, the bleachers and everything are going to hone in on how excited we are for the upcoming season.

We are hopeful that this event Friday night will be something that we'll talk about for many years and will be a great kickoff to the season."

"Hoops on the Haase-phalt" tips off Friday night on 14th Street South near Heritage Hall. The event starts at 6 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
