Dr. Stephen Nowlin ready to step into role of Jefferson County Schools Superintendent

The new choice to lead Jefferson County Schools is ready to step into his role as superintendent.

Last week, The Jefferson County School Board chose Lee County Schools Superintendent Dr. Stephen Nowlin to replace Superintendent Dr. Phil Hammonds when he retires in February.

"I know that I will have to delegate more than I have in the past, and that's not a problem," said Dr. Nowlin. "It just goes with the territory."

He isn't planning to make sweeping changes, adding Jefferson County Schools is on solid ground.

"We want to be a very professional, highly successful school system, and we want to prepare their children for tomorrow," he said. "And that's the other challenge...trying to figure out what tomorrow's going to look like."

Contract negotiations are underway, and Dr. Nowlin plans to step into the position in January.

"If you're a school superintendent, you're constantly looking for new challenges," he added. "And what you're trying to do is leave every school system better when you leave than when you arrived."
