State recommends closing 8 to 10 Birmingham city schools

Posted: Updated:

Eight to10 Birmingham City schools may close by next year. Dr. Ed Richardson, who is leading a state intervention team in Birmingham, said the closings are part of an effort to cut $9 to $12 million dollars from the district's budget.

The state intervention team will recommend the closings to the Birmingham Board of the Education in the next few months.  A list has not been released, but some of the schools have had recent renovations or additions, according to Richardson.

In August, a Jefferson County judge ruled in favor of the state's takeover of Birmingham City Schools.  The ruling stated the State has the right to implement policies and the school board cannot override its decisions. The ruling also kept Superintendent Craig Witherspoon at his position after board members tried to fire him.
