STATEWIDE -

ABC 33/40 has learned that 19 Alabamians were injected with the steroid medicine from a specialty pharmacy linked to a meningitis outbreak.  State Health Officer, Dr. Don Williamson, says all the patients were injected in either Tennessee or Florida. One of those individuals has died.

Other recalled products made by the facility linked to the meningitis outbreak went to 44 (new number) clinics and hospitals throughout the state including several in the Birmingham area. Dr. Williamson said there is no indication that any of those products were contaminated, but the recall is out of an abundance of caution. The other products were used as injections for joints, epidurals, and in some heart procedures. Williamson says all facilities are being contacted and told to notify patients receiving the injections. Any patient experiencing symptoms of swelling ,fever, increasing pain or drainage from surgical site should contact their physician immediately.
