Cotton's department store to close

Posted: Updated:

Ensley's venerable Cotton's department store will be closing its doors after 90 years. The family owned business has experienced a recent sharp decline in sales. It began noticing problems last Christmas.

A rough economy, changes in traditions, such as women's church hats, and displaced local customers due to the April, 2011 tornadoes are blamed for the sales slump.

Third generation owner, Rhonda Weinberg, says the decision to close was very difficult ,not only because her grandparents, Mitchell and Ida Cotton, opened the store, but because her customers are like family.

Although the store has just begun its liquidation sale,  the family made the decision to closed the store in April. The Weinberg family expects the store will close before the end of the year.
