UAB falls to Houston 37-19

The UAB Blazers lost their fifth game of the year on the road against Houston, 39-17, on Saturday.

UAB (1-5, 0-2) trailed by only six at halftime, but the Cougars (3-3, 2-0) reeled off 23 unanswered points in the second half, keeping the Blazers winless in Conference USA.

Houston's high-scoring offense rolled up 566 yards in the game as quarterback David Piland completed 32-44 passes with 362 yards and a touchdown. Junior running back Charles Sims rumbled for 133 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries. Sims also had three catches for 38 yards.

UAB quarterback Austin Brown threw for 302 yards in the game but only completed 20 of his 43 passes. He connected with Jay Davis in the first quarter for a 16-yard touchdown.

The Blazers leading receiver was sophomore Jemarcus Nelson of Midfield after he recorded six catches for 106 yards.

With the loss, UAB falls to last place in the C-USA East standings. They will host East Carolina next Saturday at Legion Field.
