Pelham residents react to FEMA funding

Posted: Updated:

After the City of Pelham announced it received funding for the Highway 261 drainage project, which would help alleviate flooding issues experienced by residents in several neighborhoods along the Highway 261 corridor, residents reacted Friday with relief.

"It will alleviate some fears," said Saddle Run resident Wendy Skinner Bivins.

Bivins, along with several other residents, experienced flooding several times this summer.

"What caused the flood was a thunderstorm, and it only rained 20 minutes," she said.

Residents have been trying to get relief for years. Mayor Don Murphy said the city has been working since 2009 on the Hazard Mitigation Grant.

The city council has to approve matching funds. If approved, the project would start within 90 days. It could last several years.
