BIRMINGHAM - AL -

Jefferson County Schools Superintent, Dr. Phil Hammonds, says the school board's pick to replace him...is a good one.

Hammonds told ABC 33/40, Friday, that all of the candidates to replace him were exceptionally qualified, but he believes Dr. Stephen Nowlin will push the school system forward.

"I'm optimistic about the future of the district," Dr. Hammonds said. "I think he will come in and listen a great deal, learn from his colleagues, learn from the board. So, I think it's a good future ahead for the school district."

Hammonds believes Nowlin has a strong background in both education and finances that will assist him in his new position.

Hammonds says he is looking forward to helping Nowlin with the transition into his new job.

Dr. Hammonds is scheduled to retire February 2013.
