The Jefferson County School Board has voted 4:1 in favor of Dr. Stephen Nowlin as the next Superintendent.
Board member Jacqueline Smith was the lone no vote. She says she does not believe Dr. Nowlin will move Jefferson County Schools forward.
Dr. Nowlin is the current Superintendent of Lee County Schools in Opelika. He's been with that system since 2008; however, he has 26 years of experience in education.
Board President Jennifer Parsons says she believes Dr. Nowlin will be a good fit for the Jefferson County Schools system.
"I think he'll be a quick study," she said. "He'll be able to step in and be an excellent superintendent to not only continue what Dr. Hammonds has done to make us a strong school district, but to improve to the next level. He's probably got his own vision of where we need to go."
Jacqueline Smith told the board she did not believe Nowlin had as strong a background at the administrative level as he did on the curriculum level. She believes Nowlin will keep JefCo where it is, which she says is not necessarily a bad thing, however it will not be moving the system to new levels.
Below is a list of past experience Dr. Nowlin has:
Interim Superintendent for Lee County Schools, 2007-2008
Interim Superintendent for Madison City Schools in Alabama, 2006-2007
Tenured Associate Professor of Educational Administration at Jacksonville State University 1997-2006
PEPE Administrator Evaluator and Trainer for Alabama Department of Education, 1992-2006
Interim Superintendent of Anniston City Schools in Alabama, 2000-2002
Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership at Troy State University at Dothan in Alabama, 1990-1997
Director, Tennessee Assessment Center for Prospective Principals and Director, Career Ladder Extended Contract Program for Tennessee Department of Education, 1986-1988
Dr. Nowlin will take over Dr. Phil Hammonds position when he retires in February.
