Ban on Gay 'Cure' Therapy

Posted: Updated:

Controversial therapies that can cause emotional harm to gay and lesbian youth soon will be banned in one state.

California will ban controversial therapies that some claim to be a 'cure' for homosexuality in teens.

The law was signed into law September 29.  California Governor Jerry Brown said, "This bill bans nonscientific 'therapies' that have driven young people to depression and suicide. These practices have no basis in science or medicine, and they will now be relegated to the dustbin of quackery."

The law reportedly states that no mental health provider shall give minors therapy meant to change their sexual orientation, including efforts to "change behaviors or gender expressions, or to eliminate or reduce sexual or romantic attractions or feelings toward individuals of the same sex."

The law takes effect Jan. 1.  California is the first state to take such action.
