TechBits: NFC vs. Bluetooth

Posted: Updated:

Since the iPhone 5 release, the tech industry has been talking about the lack of Near Field Communications, or NFC, on the new phone.

NFC is a low-power system used over small distances.  It's used for things like swapping contacts between phones, and some payment systems.  It does not need to be paired, and can transfer data in a fraction of a second.

The iPhone already has Bluetooth- which is a similar technology.  But Bluetooth is really designed for different applications- like wireless headsets, and data transfers between computers and smart phones.  It needs more power, and requires pairing with other devices.

NFC is only a loss for iPhone users depending on how they use their phones.  For most people, it will not be a deal breaker.
