Alabama achieves success in Advanced Placement programs

Posted: Updated:

State officials said Monday Alabama is opening doors to college for many more students. The College Board placed the state at the top of the list for Advanced Placement progress, citing a 318 percent increase in minority participation and 102 percent increase in qualifying scores.

"The intense support provided through A+ College Ready's Advance Placement Training and Incentive Program has resulted in 64 program schools achieving an average 110% increase in passing math, science and English qualifying scores during their first year of participation. This increase is 15 times the national average, said A+ College Ready President, Mary Boehm. "We are so proud of the contribution that the teachers and students in these 64 schools have made to the state's overall AP success."

Students who achieve a score of 3 or higher on an AP exam can receive college credit in courses.

The advanced placement program in dozens of Alabama public schools is made possible through state funding, a $13.2 million grant from the National Math and Science Initiative, and matching funds from donors.
