New drug brings hope for MS patients

Posted: Updated:

There's a new oral medication for the most common form of multiple sclerosis.

The drug, called BG-12, has shown considerable promise in two clinical trials.

Researchers believe BG-12 works by reducing inflammation in the brain or by helping cells in the brain and spinal cord protect themselves from the damage that is characteristic of the disease.

Some 400,000 Americans are living with Multiple Sclerosis.  There is no cure and little understanding of the cause.
