Birmingham Police charge suspect in three robbery investigations

Birmingham Police have apprehended and charged a suspect in three area robberies, according to a release.

Robert Tarver, 58, of Birmingham has been charged with three counts of first-degree robbery in connection with two area bank robberies and one robbery of a cab driver.

Tarver allegedly robbed the Wells Fargo Bank on 18th Street South on Sept. 13, the PNC Bank located on 1st Avenue North on Sept. 17. and a cab driver on Sept. 12.

A witness followed Tarver after he fled from the PNC Bank in a U-Haul truck on Monday and called police dispatch to give directions to officers in pursuit.  After following the suspect for several blocks, authorities were able to apprehend Tarver after he wrecked the moving truck.  They recovered cash and a handgun.

Tarver is currently being treated in a hospital for injuries he sustained during the truck accident.  He will be transferred to Jefferson County Jail upon his release.
