Pro-life supporters call for closure of Birmingham abortion clinic

Posted: Updated:

Pro-life supporters called for the closure of Planned Parenthood of Alabama Wednesday after a complaint was filed against the facility on behalf of a former patient who claimed she received an abortion that led to infertility.

"Just as the Department of Public Health shut down the practices of the New Women all Woman Health Clinic last May, we ask that they also shut down Planned Parenthood," said CEC For Life's Terry Gensemer.

In 2010, the facility was under a one-year probation for violations. August 20, 2010, the woman named Roberta Clark, claimed she received an ultrasound from an untrained technician then an abortion from Dr. Aqua Don Emmanual Umoren.

Twenty five days later, the lawsuit stated Clark went to Princeton Medical Center with nausea, bleeding and vomiting. A physical exam revealed she was at a 13-week gestation of an ectopic pregnancy in the fallopian tube. According to the lawsuit, she had emergency surgery, which ended in "the loss of the tube which resulted in infertility."

"Umoren was either so incompetent that his manual exam failed to determine that she had no intrauterine pregnancy, or he lied on Clark's chart," said Pro-Life Nation President Troy Newman. "This ultimately placed Clark in a life-threatening situation. She was lucky to survive."

Planned Parenthood released the following statement:

"Today, we learned that a complaint has been filed against our health center in Birmingham, Alabama. At Planned Parenthood, we care deeply about the health and safety of each and every patient. We do not publicly discuss private patient matters and we take very seriously and follow the HIPAA Rules that forbid the disclosure of patient information, including that we do not confirm whether or not someone was seen at our health centers."
