BIRMINGHAM - AL -

Actress, singer and activist Rosario Dawson is coming to the Magic City.  Dawson will give a free, public lecture at the University of Alabama at Birmingham 7 p.m. Thursday, September 20, 2012. The event, part of the campus-wide celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, will be held in UAB's Alys Stephens Center.

Dawson has been featured in many films, including "Josie and the Pussycats," "Men in Black II," "25th Hour," "The Rundown," "Alexander," "Sin City" and "Eagle." The New York native recently was seen in "Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief" as Persephone. She also is the star of an online sci-fi series, "Gemini Division," which debuted in August 2008.

In addition to her stage work, Dawson also co-founded the non-partisan organization Voto Latino in 2004, which says it works to promote an enfranchised America by leveraging celebrity voices, the latest technology and youth themselves to promote positive change.

Dawson serves on the board of directors for V-Day and Scenarios USA and has also lent her support to numerous organizations, such as Amnesty International; Lower East Side Girls Club; ONE Campaign; Oxfam; Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG); Twenty Women For Darfur; and Youth AIDS.
